Biographical Information
|
| Daewon Byun is Professor of Atmospheric Science, Department of Geosciences at the University of Houston. He is jointly appointed as Professor of Chemistry. He leads UH Air Quality Modeling Group, a multidisciplinary institute in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Dr. Byun received his B.Sc. in Meteorology in 1977 from the Seoul National University, Korea. Since, he served as Weather Officer at the Navy Command Center, R.O.K and honorably discharged at the rank of Senior Lieutenant in 1981. He was awarded an M.S. degree in Atmospheric Sciences in 1983 and a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences in 1987, both from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. Since then, Dr. Byun has worked as a research atmospheric scientist in various capacities. He worked for Environmental Research & Technology (Currently, ENSR) in 1987 as meteorological modeler, Computer Sciences Corporation as Senior Scientific Specialist from 1988 to 1992, and Environmental Protecion Agency, on assignment from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 1992 to 2001. In 2001 he moved to the University of Houston to establish and direct the UH Air Quality Modeling Group. During his professional career, Dr. Byun has contributed to air quality modeling community in many ways: He implemented Regional Acid Deposition Model for EPA for the National Acid Deposition Assessment Project, and lead a team of EPA, NOAA and scientists from academia for the development of the EPA's Models-3 Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system. Currently, he serves in the Science Board for the NCAR/Air Force Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) project and Executive Committee of the Texas Natural Resources and Conservation Commission's Science Review Committee for Air Quality Study. |
