EAS Welcomes Daniel Hauptvogel
Instructional Assistant Professor and Co-Director, Geosciences Learning Center

Daniel Hauptvogel is an instructional assistant professor in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and co-director of the Geosciences Learning Center. He obtained his Ph.D. from the City University of New York in 2015 where he was investigating the paleoclimate of Antarctica though a variety of geologic techniques. His B.S. and M.S. degrees are both from Montclair State University in New Jersey.

Hauptvogel is primarily interested in using sediment provenance to determine the erosional history of the Antarctic continent during warmer times and is interested in adapting these techniques for other areas of the world. As an instructional assistant professor, he will be teaching, continuing his research on paleoclimate, and co-directing the Geosciences Learning Center in the Lamar Fleming Building.

The purpose of the Geosciences Learning Center (GLC) is to provide a second approach to the study of geology, outside of classroom-led instruction. The GLC provides opportunities for hands-on examination of minerals and rocks, a selection of geology videos, interactive computer programs, and one-on-one or small-group tutorials. The GLC staff also conducts a number of short on-campus field trips, guides students on tours of the Houston Museum of Natural Science, and coordinates field trips to Central Texas and Galveston.
