The Learning Center

The Department of Geosciences operates a Geosciences Learning Center (GLC) in the basement of the Old Science Building. The GLC is staffed by faculty and by graduate students who are available to help students in their studies in the geosciences.

The purpose of the Learning Center is to provide a second approach to the study of Geology, outside of the classroom-led instruction. We are aware that the study of Geology can cover a vast amount of material, and that the time spent in formal classes is limited. The Geosciences Learning Center (GLC) was established to provide a supplementary learning experience in Geology. Thus the GLC provides opportunities: for hands-on examination of minerals, rocks and fossils, to view a selection of geology videos, to explore the field of geology via interactive computer programs, and to have one-on-one, and small-group tutorials on selected topics. The GLC staff also conducts a number of short on-campus field trips, guides students on tours of the Museum of Natural Science, and coordinates field trips to Central Texas and Galveston. The GLC also runs several geologic review sessions at announced times throughout the semester.

While available to answer queries on a wide variety of geologic topics, the major activities of the GLC are aimed at providing assistance to students registered in the introductory classes, particularly GEOL1330 Physical Geology, and 1376 Historical Geology. The ultimate goal of the GLC is to make learning easier and more enjoyable by allowing a more personal encounter with geology and geologists.
